Department of Architecture Universitas Indonesia Participates in Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2017

In September 2017, the team from Department of Architecture, Universitas Indonesia was honored to represent Jakarta in exhibiting the programs that have been done in Kampung Cikini at Seoul Biennale 2017. Seoul Biennale is an international event held in Seoul, South Korea by Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Design Foundation. With the theme of ‘Imminent Commons’, this event brings the complexity of issue in addressing the dynamics of commons in the city. The exhibition will present various conditions, possibilities, ideas and innovations relating to the issues, which will be displayed by various cities of the world. All installations, live projects, international design studios, public programs, movie and video screenings can be enjoyed for 3 months starting from September to November 2017.

Since 2011, Kampung Cikini has become a living laboratory for Universitas Indonesia and University of Tokyo to get the first hand experience of complexity and possibility of problem and solution in Kampung. Using a combination of top-down and bottom-up approaches, the projects in Kampung Cikini strive to address the challenges of conventional city planning’s inability to respond to changing issues in the city.

In the exhibition, the team introduce ‘Between Boundaries,’ telling the story of kampung cikini through their common spaces in alleys, parking lots, river, open area and goes inside each of the houses. BETWEEN BOUNDARIES will show how resident of Kampung Cikini creatively try to negotiate with a densely populated kampung area in their everyday activity, presented as an integrated part of our projects of public toilets that acted as the activities of the assembly and collective action.

The exhibition will be open from September to November 2017 in Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Seoul, South Korea as parts of the Cities Exhibition.
