Scott Merrillees

Author of books Batavia in Nineteenth Century, Jakarta: Postcards of a Capital 1900-1950, and ”
Jakarta: Portraits of a Capital 1950-1980

Scott Merrillees has been researching the history and development of Jakarta for thirty years and he has written three books covering the period from the late 1850s up to 1980. Using early photographs and picture postcards of Jakarta (or Batavia) as a starting point, Scott’s collecting, researching and writing tries to answer the questions: What did Jakarta look like in the past? What were the influences which shaped its development and, how did it evolve into the city it is today?

The books are Scott’s personal time machine which aim to transport the reader back to the Jakarta of an earlier age and bring it back to the life, for the understanding and enjoyment of modern residents and visitors alike before it is lost forever.
