Development of Visibility Analysis Tools for Healthcare Design Facilities


Visibility is a spatial property that holds an important role in constructing human spatial perception of its environment. Due to the complexities on healthcare facilities, the visibility of spatial settings could affect the performance of the facilities. The visibility of healthcare facilities strongly relates to its spatial configuration which could be analyzed to provide feedback for design improvement. To understand that relation, we develop computational tools to analyze and visualize the visibility properties. The current development is utilizing the idea of isovist and visibility graph to represent the visual access in given spatial settings. The visibility analysis tool could be applied to assess the spatial performance of certain areas of hospitals where visual monitoring and legibility becomes important issues. The visibility analysis of inpatient ward could illustrate the visual control and surveillance by the nurses towards the patients and visitors. The visibility analysis of the hospital lobby could illustrate the needs for better wayfinding system to help
the visitors to navigate throughout the hospital spaces. By visibility analysis, it is possible to evaluate the existing spatial configuration and suggest improvement for better performance of visual control, surveillance and wayfinding.
