Yandi Andri Yatmo, ST, Dipl, March, PhD received Diploma, Master and PhD, all in Architecture from University of Sheffield. His works are primarily on design theories and their relevance to design practice. He considers architecture as an intersection between society, physical entities and intervention that occur in between. He mainly bases his works on the understanding of architecture from everyday point of view, which he believes to be necessary to reduce the distance between architectural profession and society. Some of his works explore the production of space by the society and their everydayness. He is also interested in seeing architectural space within the context of temporal dynamics, both the dynamics of the physical environment and the dynamics of the society. Hence he always considers changes, ephemerality and unpredictability as important ingredients in our architectural practice. Another dimension that he also explores is the sustainability in the context of urban society and urban environment, and how architectural practice needs to respond to the current challenge of sustainability. Architectural education should also be based on the needs to be responsive to the factual issues and develop ideas and statements from the everyday life of society – not merely from the abstract ideas and sole intentions of architects. This has become his basis in developing studio programmes at the University of Indonesia. Participation becomes an element of design process, which he attempts to introduce in various kinds of learning activities, through the involvement of students into the society.
